An Orangeburg man charged with stealing copper last week had another five counts of grand larceny added to his account Tuesday.

The five new charges against Xavier Deandre Furtick, 19, of 1857 Par Court, were added to the single count of grand larceny levied against him last week.

“Well, Mr. Furtick, you’ve been a one-man crime wave,” said Orangeburg City Judge Barney Houser. “You’re charged with taking the coils out of six air conditioning units in a two-week period.”

Furtick was charged last Wednesday with an initial count of grand larceny after police saw a vehicle attempting to leave the yard of a Carolina Avenue residence. Officers stopped the car and found the air conditioning unit at the home had been destroyed.

“Your Honor, I was just wondering if, on the bond, right, if you could set bond,” Furtick said during a court appearance Tuesday. “My little girl’s sick and I just want to be there for her.”

Furtick said he only admitted to the crimes, “Because he (an officer) said he was going to throw them at me anyway.”

“I just want to get home to my little girl,” he said.

“I’m sure you do want to get home,” Houser said. “Somebody’s got to do something about these damaged air conditioners. It’s not just a couple of dollars, it’s several thousands of dollars.”

“Ain’t no way I could be under house arrest?”

“I’m going to set bond at $20,000 – on each.”

“How much is that?”

“That’s $100,000.”

The six warrants against Furtick allege that he removed the coil packs from four air conditioning units on Carolina Avenue and two on nearby Latimore Street between Oct. 1 and Oct. 15.

Officials estimate the damage to the five units connected with Tuesday’s charges to be around $13,500.
