Saints Jeffery listed in ESPNU’s 150 ranking

Alshon Jeffery can add one more accolade to an already impressive football resume before he and the Saints begin regular season play.

The Calhoun County wide receiver has been ranked 97th in ESPNU’s ranking for the Class of 2009.

The prestigious list ranks the top 150 prep football players in the nation. Jeffery is one of 10 athletes from South Carolina to make the ESPNU 150. Last year, former Bamberg-Ehrhardt standout DaQuan Bowers was listed as the top athlete on the ESPNU 150.

Despite the honor, Saints head coach Walter Wilson doesn’t believe it is something that his star player or his program focuses on.

“To be honest with you,” Wilson said in a phone interview, “We don’t even think about it. We don’t think about individual goals. We think about team goals.”

Jeffery committed to play for the University of Southern California in June after being recruited by a number of football programs. Jeffery also attended the Rising Stars camp in Los Angeles. There, he took part in drills with California prep quarterback Matt Barkley, his future Trojan teammate and the top athlete in ESPNU’s 150. Jeffery will also have the opportunity to play in the Under Armour All-America High School Football Game on Jan. 4, 2009.

" Don't fall for the hype Alshon. Upon graduating from SC State I moved to Los Angeles and it ain't all that. Everyone there was asking me about SC State. They would see me in SCSU gear and say, i think y'all can beat Oklahoma since y'all got Moses Malone son on your hoops team. I asked them how you know that. They said we keep up with all the good players. So if you want some real good advice. Don't sell out to the hype. Be original. If you are good they(the NFL) will find you at SC State. And this way your family can drive to see you play. NFL recruits live in Orangeburg scouting players. I say at least visit SC State and call coach Pough. But when the so-call big schools wine and dine you it's only because they want soemthing from you. Just like a pimp that wines and dines women so they let their gaurd down. Everyone at the other USC runs a 4.4. You could be redshirted to death there they don't care. You are right next to Orangeburg County. Man Up and be an individual. Don't always follow the crowd. Did you hear about the WR that signed with oklahoma. They kicked him out of school because he did a rap on youtube. They don't care about you. You will say-you just hypeing SCSU. No. Don't come to Crunk College-SCSU. We only want players that want to be there. Heck go to USC in Columbia so your moms and fellow students can see you mature and play, and you will inspire cats from your area to achieve their goals. Cali ain't all that. Everyone is running away from something and think the grass is always greener. Check out Steve Harvey's website and his Black College Expo held in LA. Where he sends thousands of students your age to SC State, Howard, FAMU, Grambling, because they know ain't nothing in LA. They all say they want to be at a university that cares. "
