Artist teaches stained glass techniques to locals
Thursday, July 17, 2008BLACKVILLE -- Looking for a one-of-a-kind work of art to hang on this year's Christmas tree or out your window to catch the sun?
Stained glass artist Alice French of St. Matthews will present a mosaic ornament-making class at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor Region 3 Discovery Center in Blackville. Children and adults are welcome to attend. The cost is $15 per person and includes all materials.
French has been working with stained glass since 1980. She has incorporated this medium in windows, lamps, kaleidoscopes, nativity scenes, wind chimes, mosaic projects and more and has participated in art shows across the state, including the Orangeburg Art Center's annual Diverse Art Show.
One of French's favorite projects is working with children. Her mosaic work began with vacation Bible school in her church and grew to classes at Orangeburg Prep, Calhoun Academy, Mellichamp Elementary and Orangeburg Art Center.

Through interpretive exhibits, historical information, a gift shop of local artists and a rotating exhibit space, the Region 3 Discovery Center shares the heritage of Aiken, Bamberg, Barnwell and Orangeburg counties. The center is opened to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free.
