A 28-year-old Orangeburg man was shot dead Wednesday night as he was riding along with acquaintances.

Now deputies want to know exactly what happened along U.S. 178 that evening in their search for the person who shot Archstell Scott of Windward Street.

Officials received a call at about 7:45 p.m., saying a individual was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his left armpit, according to Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams.

The individuals who carried the man to the hospital said the shooting occurred while they were traveling along U.S. 178 East. Scott was a passenger in the vehicle.

"Upon approaching ... the Orangeburg area, a vehicle allegedly pulled up alongside their vehicle and allegedly fired a firearm," Williams said.

Williams said the investigation is still in its early stages and autopsy results are awaited.
